Scott Beck

As a kid, nothing was better for Scott than hanging out at the hospital with his dad, watching Dr. Beck at work.  Scott was sure he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. A dedicated oncologist, Dr. Beck’s commitment to his patients was obvious, even to his young son.

Raised in Boise, Idaho, Scott’s plan was to major in pre-med at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and become a doctor like his dad. His career route took a detour when he realized he liked his business classes much better than his pre-med curriculum. That’s when he had a “what if” moment. What if there was a way to combine business and entrepreneurship classes that fascinated him with the science and service of medicine?

Now he had a new passion. Scott completed a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Utah and moved on to an MBA at Westminster College in Salt Lake City. He joined CHG in 1999, working his way up the leadership ladder to become the company’s CEO in 2015.

“My dad used to say, ‘The harder you work, the luckier you get,” Scott says with a grin. “I’ve found that to be very true. I’m not always the smartest guy in the room but I’ll outwork and outlast almost anybody.”

Besides hard work, Scott says having a plan and a vision are essential to success. But don’t get the idea he’s an all work, no play kind of guy. In fact, Scott says having work/life balance is critical.

What does the boss do when he needs a break? He loves spending time with his wife, Cheri, and grown children Thomas and Katie. If they’re not hanging out at their cabin in Idaho, he’s probably climbing a mountain somewhere. (Before COVID, he and Katie summitted Mt. Kilimanjaro.) He loves skiing, mountain biking, and running too.

And then there’s that whole idea of community service. Whether it’s serving on the board of his alma mater, around the block with Big Brothers Big Sisters, or a continent away in Kenya, Scott is always looking for ways to give back. He makes those opportunities available to everyone at CHG, not just the C-suite, by offering paid time off for volunteering and company sponsored service trips.

Along the way, he’s been recognized by his peers nationally as one of the top leaders in the staffing industry, as well as Utah’s CEO of the year.

“CHG is a great place to grow your skills and your career,” Scott says.

He knows a thing or two about growth. Since he joined the company, CHG has grown from about 200 employees to a team of more than 3,000. Getting bigger isn’t as important as getting better. And that, Scott says, comes from having core values you stick to, personally and professionally.

“We want to make a difference in the lives of our people, our providers, our clients, and our communities,” Scott says.

That’s a big goal for the kid from Boise. But remember, he’s willing to outwork everyone to reach it — and help everyone have a good time doing it.
